'Possible' in December, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Losyukov on six-party talks on the DPRK nuclear programme, November 12

'Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Losyukov Answers a Question from Interfax News Agency Regarding the Date for the Second Round of Talks on the North Korean Nuclear Problem', November 12, 2003.

Question: Foreign media reports, including those from Tokyo and Seoul, assert that the next round of six-way talks on the North Korean nuclear program will be held in December, possibly on the 10th-13th of December. Could you comment on such reports?

Answer: Indeed, there have appeared reports in the foreign media that the second round of talks to settle the North Korean nuclear problem may be held even in mid-December. I must note that in our talks with the Chinese, American and Korean partners no dates have figured thus far. At the same time, on the condition of an appropriate preparation, the Russian side considers possible the holding of the second round of talks in December. In the case of adoption of a decision on a specific date the work on preparations for the talks will need speeding up.

It will be recalled that the first round of talks on the North Korean nuclear problem was held in Beijing at the end of August. The representatives of Russia, the US, the DPRK, the Republic of Korea, Japan and the PRC took part in the meeting.
