US Considers Laser Test in Space
According to the New York Times on 1 September, the US
Department of Defense (DoD) is considering a space test of a new
military laser. According to the report, on which the DoD did not
immediately comment, the test would aim to fire the laser, from the
White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, at a US Air Force
satellite. The new weapon - reportedly known as Miracle
(Mid-Infrared Advanced Chemical Laser) - has apparently already
been tested on the ground. Tests aimed at satellites were
prohibited until 1995, when the ban was overturned by Congress.
