Disarmament Diplomacy

Issue No. 13, February - March 1997

Cambodia Ratifies Treaty of Bangkok

On 20 January, Cambodia ratified the South East Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty - the Treaty of Bangkok, signed by 10 States (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam) in December 1995.

The nuclear-weapon States are currently withholding their signature to the treaty's protocols due to concern over definitions of territory. There have been some indications that the protocols will be amended accordingly, but no firm progress has yet been confirmed.

Report: Cambodia ratifies controversial ASEAN nuclear-weapon-free zone treaty, Agence France-Presse International News, 20 January.
