Disarmament Diplomacy

Issue No. 17, July - August 1997

Russia to De-Target Japan

On 20 June Russia announced that it would stop targeting nuclear weapons at Japan. The announcement followed a meeting between Russia's President, Boris Yeltsin, and Japan's Prime Minister, Ryutaro Hashimoto, at the Denver Summit of the G-8 (Group of 7 leading industrialised countries plus Russia). According to a spokesperson for Prime Minister Hashimoto:

"The President told the Premier that there are former Soviet missiles still targeted at Japan, and the time has come to take Japan off the targets."

Report: Russia says it will stop pointing nukes at Japan, Reuters World Service, 20 June.
