UN Under Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Appointed

On 14 January, Jayantha Dhanapala of Sri Lanka was appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to be the first Under Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs, due to begin work officially on 2 February. The Department for Disarmament Affairs (DDA) is being established as part of a package of reforms adopted by the UN General assembly on 12 November (see last issue).

Jayantha Dhanapala has served as Sri Lanka's Ambassador to the United Nations, the Conference on Disarmament and the United States. In April and May 1995, he chaired the Review and Extension Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
