The NPT Review Conference 2005: Acronym Special Coverage

Day 10: NPT RevCon Agenda reportedly agreed, with an asterix

The agenda for the NPT Review Conference was reportedly agreed on Wednesday, making it possible for the committees now to be convened. It was reported by colleagues in New York that the President, Ambassador Sergio Duarte of Brazil, read out the statement originally planned for last Friday, following which the pared-down agenda was agreed. The president's statement in connection with the adoption of the agenda said, "It is understood that the review will be conducted in the light of the decisions and the resolution of previous Conferences, and allow for discussion of any issue raised by states parties." The NAM then made a statement reaffirming the 1995 and 2000 outcomes, decisions, resolutions etc. Apparently this NAM statement was linked to the disputed paragraph 16 of the agenda by an asterix. The EU welcomed the decision, faces were saved and the Review Conference now moves to its next stage.

Meanwhile, there are also other vitally important security issues to address, such as preventing the deployment of weapons of any kind in and from space, which is why I will be in DC and not NY when the committees get underway (we hope) Thursday. Check http://www.reachingcriticalwill.org whose next briefing will no doubt provide more detail of the hows and whys underlying this decision.
