Disarmament DiplomacyIssue No. 22, January 1998News reviewUS FY1999 Defense Budget RequestOn 30 January, the press covered details of the proposed US Department of Defense (DoD) budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 1999 - see next issue for more details. The total amount being requested is $270.6 billion, of which $13.3 billion is being requested by the Department of Energy (DOE) for its nuclear-weapons programmes. The total budget secured for FY 1998 was $267.7 billion. $48.7 billion is being requested for weapons procurement, $36.1 billion for research and development, $4 billion for missile defence programmes, and $464 million for Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) projects in the former Soviet Union..
