On 30 January, the press covered details of the proposed US Department of Defense (DoD) budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 1999 - see next issue for more details. The total amount being requested is $270.6 billion, of which $13.3 billion is being requested by the Department of Energy (DOE) for its nuclear-weapons programmes. The total budget secured for FY 1998 was $267.7 billion. $48.7 billion is being requested for weapons procurement, $36.1 billion for research and development, $4 billion for missile defence programmes, and $464 million for Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) projects in the former Soviet Union..
