About the International Atomic Energy Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), established in 1957, defines itself as the "worlds centre of cooperation in the nuclear field", working worldwide "to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies". The IAEA's headquarters are in Vienna. The Acronym Institute does not cover the IAEA's work in general, but only in relation to the NPT. The IAEA is responsible for safeguards agreements under the NPT (Article III). Increasingly, questions are raised about the contradictions between effective fulfilment of this verification role and the IAEA's mission of promoting nuclear energy.
