Introductory Notes

The Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy will be posting key statements, texts and reports on developments at the 2002 annual session of the United Nations First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) in New York. Comprehensive analysis will be provided in Disarmament Diplomacy No. 68 (December 2002).

The Committee's work this year falls into four phases: phase 1, General Debate, September 30-October 11; phase 2, Thematic Discussion and Introduction of Texts, October 14-18; phase three, Action on Texts, October 21-19; phase four, October 30-November 1, Issues Relating to Antarctica.

On September 27, Matia Mulumba Semakula Kiwanuke (Uganda) was elected as Chair of the Committee. Three Vice Chairs were also elected: Jamal Nassir Al-Bader (Qatar), Jose Nicolas Rivas (Colombia), Razvan Victor Rusu (Romania). Mehmet Samsar (Turkey) was elected as Rapporteur.
