United Nations First Committee

The United Nations, which came into existence on October 24, 1945, now has 192 members. It comprises the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship, International Court of Justice and Secretariat. It also has 15 agencies and a wide-ranging number of associated bodies and programmes. The purposes of the United Nations are defined on its website thus: "to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international economic, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promotion respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations in attaining these ends."

The United Nations First Committee is a subcommittee of the UN General Assembly and deals with disarmament and international security. The First Committee comprises all 192 members of the UN and meets each autumn.
