Disarmament Diplomacy
Issue No. 19, October 1997
India Begins Production of New Missile
On 28 September, the Press Trust of India reported that production
of India's controversial surface-to-surface Prithvi missile
had begun. The missile reportedly has a range of 95 miles, and is
alleged to be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The US and
other States have also repeatedly urged both India and Pakistan not
to deploy any new missiles.
On 29 September, a spokesperson for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry
expressed "serious concern" about the commencement of production.
"India's decision," the spokesperson argued, "is bound to escalate
tension and add to the deterioration of the security situation in
the region."
